I had my Lab castrated last week and the vet left the sack in place and just took the testicles out. The sack was all swollen and gross so i took him back and he was given anti inflamitaries and antibiotics. At the moment he has bigger balls than when he started.
I was wondering if anybody elses vet has done it this way and if so does the skin shrink back or will it stay all loose, also how long does it take for the dog to get back to normal because my dog seems very uncomfortable. |

They ALWAYS leave the sack. and it will shrink a little bit. Sounds to me like it just got infected otherwise it wouldnt be a big deal at all.

Maybe he wanted to give you the option of having Neuticals (fake balls) implanted so the dog wouldn't feel inadequate.

They never take the "sack " when they neuter a dog... it will shrink down just give it time.

Did he in fact, leave the testicles so the dog would 'look' normal but cut and cauterize the tubes? More than likely the sack would eventually look somewhat normal for a male dog but only you Vet can tell you that.

The sack is always left and just the testicles removed. It should shrink up and hardly be noticeable.

This is the standard way. To remove the sack or scrotum (a scrotal ablation) is a much more involved surgery, not generally done unless there is a tumor or other problem. Your dog's swelling is not common, but it is definitely not rare, especially in older males. Licking and chewing make the problem worse. Within a week, he should be fine. The skin will shrink, although it may not be perfectly flat if he was a mature adult before you had his surgery.

Sounds like your pet has an infection from the surgery. The sack will swell if not taken care of and be painful. In time the sack will shrink up and mostly disappear. In the mean time make sure it's taken care of by the vet that did the surgery. Your pet will be back to normal after the infection is gone. Keep your pet quiet and let him rest so he/she heals properly. Good luck.

This often happens ...the sac fills with fluid, but it soon disappears....and eventually, when the swelling has gone down, you will find the sac shrinks until its almost unnoticable.

They do not take the scrotum away. Once all the inflammation goes down you are left with the sack, which then shrinks.
