Any details about how they affect a horse would be welcome to.
I was trying to help a friend clip her horse today ( a horse I have been working with for over 3 weeks under saddle and ground manners). This is not a case of fear or pain. I spent 3 hours just intro-ing the clippers clipped under his chin, his bridle path, and even his EARS. when I went to his nose he got "huffy" calmed the huffy and then tried again. This is an angry streak I have seen before in this breed. This is NOT fear trust me. He reared up and struck out ( and hit pay dirt... I have a black eye to prove it.)

We asked the vet and were given the proper dosage for ace. I gave the drug IV . And still flying front feet just not as fast. This is a dangerous behavior that WILL lead to other dangers knowing how the personality will take a win and demand more of them his way.

Years ago I was given a coctail by a vet to use when I doctored my stallion of the two meds in question and he could hardly stand (1000lb - 1cc ace and 2cc of the second) any opinions and/or advice?

    Acepromazine Maleate, and Xylazine.

Ace will make the horse drowsy but still aware of pain. It can also increase blood circulation - especially in the extremities.

Xylazine acts directly on the brain and makes the horse dopey. It can also increase a horses "kick" reflex.

    Personally, I prefer Ace.

1cc xylazine and 1/2 cc ace (together) will take the edge off in a fairly quiet horse... 2 cc xylazine and 1 cc ace will make them pretty droopy but still able to "snap out of it" quickly. I wouldn't use more than that before going to dormosedan (start with 0.2 cc if the horse is already sedated) and go up 1 or 2 tenths at a time in 10 min intervals if you find you need heavier sedation. If you get to more than 1 cc dorm with the ace and xylazine... you have a REALLY touch cookie and need to try twitching along with the sedation!

Since these are all prescription meds, you need to have a vet's supervision or instructions, and if the goal is training the horse, the sedation probably isn't the best method.
