I had an idea and wanted to hear other's opinions. Would it be a good idea to bury a rat igloo (http://www.dapper.com.au/toysigloo.jpg) with bedding (I use aspen wood shavings) and leave only the entrance exposed? I figured it would help keep it warm inside their little house. Would that work or should I not waste the bedding?
I did join a forum, Peggy. Holistarat. And I take it your answer was a no :P Also, the link..yeah, it kind of kept the parentheses at the end as apart of the hyper link. Here: http://www.dapper.com.au/toysigloo.jpg Thanks Spazrats. I only have two little rats (which will be separated for about 2 months. The male will be neutered and returned to the female a few weeks after the surgery) I know they'll be a little lonely at times when I am at class or asleep so they have to be in their own cages. I thought the igloo buried under bedding would help with them being warmer. Maybe I can add a little sock or rag in there for them to snuggle up to when it's nippy. |

I like the idea. Sounds like it would be a cozy burrow. Can I come and be your rat? You could spoil me rotten
Don't make it too warm for them. Rats like a cooler environment rather then one that is too hot. My rats love the igloo. The only problem I found with an igloo is that if more then 4 rats occupy it at the same time it gets very warm in there. Aspen is the proper wood to use if you like wood beddings. It's the pine and cedar that are dangerous. Edit: Your boy needs to stay separated from her after he is neutered for 6 weeks or longer to assure that he doesn't get her pregnant. First of all the link isn't working for some reason but I know what you're talking about since I am an owner of proper pet rats and not wild ones.
I personally wouldn't buy one of those igloos for my boy because it's too small for him and plus he doesn't like living in a house, he prefers nesting and sleeping with newspaper clippings and shavings. I'd suggest you join a great rat group full of nice people like http://www.ratclub.org/index.htm that isn't just for NZers btw. |

I don't think you'd have to bury it, I think you'd just have to put it in there and they'd bury it themselves lol. At least that's what mine did. I got my idea from the dapper rat as well except I used the lunchbox one
Good luck with your babies, aren't they wonderful animals. xx |

I have rats and they don't really like the little igloos because they are pretty small and also I would probably not use wood shavings because they are not as good for your rats, I recommend the soft bedding, also if you wanna get your rat something like an igloo I notice that my rats prefer the big wood houses.
