Congratulations! Pigs can be tons of fun.

First of all, learn how to check the sex of your guinea pig. A pet shop sold me two pigs and said they were males. I sexed them both when I got home and one came up repeatedly as female. I figured I was just doing it wrong, but then I came home one day and found I had six pigs instead of two. So learn the procedure -- any book or Web site can tell you -- and do it yourself. You don't want to end up with a pregnant female if you really want a male.

Give your pig plenty of fresh veggies to supplement its regular food. Food can get stuck in pigs' teeth, but give yours a wooden block to gnaw on and that should take care of cleaning them. Make sure you always have a block to gnaw on because pigs' teeth grow constantly, and long teeth will cut your pig's lip and prevent it from eating and drinking. If your pig's teeth do get too long, your vet can cut them (don't worry, it's like cutting your nails and doesn't hurt).

Also, don't use sawdust in your hutch. Pigs can inhale fine sawdust and it doesn't do their respiratory systems much good. I used wood shavings for mine. Also, you're not supposed to lay down newspaper in the hutch because your pig will nibble it and the ink does it no good; however, I used newspaper and my pigs seemed to do OK.

That's all I can think of for now -- I hope it helps. Good luck with your pig. :-)

You two best bets would be

    www.guineapigcages.com
    and
    www.guinealynx.com

They are both excellent sites. 'You don't need to brush the teeth and if you get an American, teddy, white crested, etc (short haired breeds) you don't need to brush the coat. Their teeth are naturally white unlike rats that I've seen. Be sure that she always has timothy or meadow grass 24/7.

That's great that you are doing your research beforehand!

Aside from GPcages and guinealynx, I suggest http://cavyspirit.com as well. Please keep in mind that guinea pigs are social animals. If you plan to get a guinea pig, be sure to get it a friend.

You don't need to brush their teeth. Their teeth are constantly growing though, so they require hay 24/7. By chewing hay, they are able to grind their teeth down.

I've got short haired guinea pigs and while they don't need to be brushed, I do run my fingers through their hair to remove loose hairs. Long haired guinea pigs like shelties and peruvians require brushing to prevent their hair from getting tangled. Their hair will need to be trimmed as well.

Do you live near a library? They have some great books with loads of info and you both could make a guinea pig file with all the info you need, and it will be on hand as a reference also to record their wieght so you'll know how well they are growing. I'm sure you'll make great pig parents!.
