My cat has been having hair balls much more frequently than normal. He usually has 1-2 dense hair balls per year.

Since January, he's hacked up three. Two were pretty insignificant. The third was normal for him (looked like a mini turd). I did talk to his vet about it between hairballs #2 and #3 and he didn't seem concerned. But cat's still hacking like there's more in there. Otherwise he is in perfect health with clear eyes, good coat, good teeth. He's been getting into the dog food once in a while. Other than that, I can't think of anything that has changed.

    Would you be worried?
Okay, I have had cats my whole life. I know cats get hairballs once in a while. My concern is that he is having them more frequently than normal for him. I will try the hairball goo, but I know from previous experience that he doesn't like it.

Give my cat a bath once a month???? Are you kidding?! I'd be shredded to ribbons and scarred for life within 30 seconds. This is a very strong cat that panics easily. That plus water is a very bad combination.

Have you tried switching to a hairball formula food. Otherwise check with your vet it could be something more serious.
Also make sure your brushing 1x a week and giving baths 1x a month.

The more you brush and groom your cat the less hairballs they will get. If you keep kitty groomed and brushed and the vet isn't worried I wouldn't be worried either.

It's normal for a cat to hack up hairballs, but if the vet isn't worried about it, it should be okay. You might try switching to a sensitive stomach food, or a hairball formula (I think IAMS makes that one), and you can buy over the counter hairball paste to give them to help stop them. You can get it at Petsmart or Petco.

Hairballs are fairly common, so as long as he's acting normal and not sick I wouldn't worry. You can get Hairball remedy at a pet store. It's basically a flavored grease and helps the hairball "pass" through the digestive track. Some cats like the taste, but some hate it. Or you can get a food that's formulated to limit hairballs. I don't know how they work. Whenever my cats start hacking up hairballs, I give them a dose of the hairball remedy stuff and they don't have anymore problems, usually for quite a while.

    Yeah.
I'd take him to the vet again.
And start cursing out the vet.
    He sounds like a dumbAsz.

Have you tried giving your cat a hairball remedy? Laxatone is a great one! Some petstores carry it. I get mine from the vet.

You could also try giving him a food that is for hairball prevention and control. I switched my cat to Blue Buffalo, which seems to help. Nutro Natural Choice also has a hairball prevention line that is good.

In winter, the coat grows thicker...and as it starts to warm up, the "winter coat" sheds, causing more hairballs. This may be the case for your kitty.

He is just getting too much fur in his stomach when he is grooming himself. Cats loose their winter coats when the weather starts to warm up. perhaps this is why he is having more hairballs. Try grooming and brushing him twice a week. The more fur you get off in the brush the less fur he will have in his stomach

there is stuff you can give them for that... ask your vets.. It's like "paste" that you squeeze on their paw, and, being the clean animals they are, they lick it off and ingest it..it helps dissolve hair balls in their stomach..

But you have to put it on right, smear it well, so they can't make a mess "shaking it off" LOL..
